WHAT IS PEPTIC ULCERS ?
Peptic ulcers are the ulcers or sores in the stomach lining or the first part of the intestine called duodenum. It is a painful situation for the suffer. A peptic ulcer, also known as PUD or peptic ulcer disease is the most common ulcer of the gastrointestinal tract that is usually acidic. It happens when the acids that aid in digestion of food, damage/eroded the walls of the stomach or duodenum. The erosion is caused by the increase activity of acid-pepsin and by decreased resistance of the gastric mucosa. The most common cause is infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. Not all who have a ulcer are infected with H pylori. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can cause ulcers if taken regularly. Stress (physical or emotional), Alcohol, Caffeine, and Cigarette smoking can also cause ulcers.
The burning pain is present usually in the upper middle part of the abdomen, above the belly button and below the breastbone and often comes several hours after a meal when the stomach is empty getting worse at night and early morning. The medical management will include medications, lifestyle changes, diet modification and surgical intervention in extreme cases.
Don't smoke, and avoid coffee and alcohol as these increase gastric acid production promoting ulcer formation in GI tract especially duodenum.
