Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis Primus Department of Internal Medicine

Pulmonary tuberculosis also known as TB is a highly contagious infection that attacks the lungs It can also affect other parts of the body. The infection can spread through the air when an infected person who has an active TB infection sneeze, cough, or otherwise transmit their saliva through the air. Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

When a person comes in contact with the tuberculosis, the bacteria in the lungs multiply and cause pneumonia along with chest pain, coughing up blood, and a prolonged cough. In addition to this , the lymph nodes near the heart and lungs become enlarged. If the immune system is unable to fight TB, the disease returns to an active state with pneumonia and damage to bones, kidneys, and the meninges that line the spinal cord and brain. The classic symptoms of active TB infection are a chronic cough with blood-
tinged sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. The World Health Organization recommends that infants receive a vaccine called BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin). BCG is fairly effective in protecting small children from severe TB complications.

Stopping the spread of TB

1. Infected patients should always cover their mouth sneezing or coughing.
2. Patients with latent infection- i.e. when there are no signs of active medication – the person should take medication to prevent the disease to become active.
3. People with a risk of getting the disease should go for preventive checkups.

Protect your friends and family

If you have active Tuberculosis, keep your germs to yourself. It normally takes a few weeks of treatment with medications before you're not contagious help keep your friends and family from getting sick:

Stay home
Ventilate the room.
Cover your mouth
Wear a mask.
Finish your entire course of medication

The last step is the most vital step one can take to protect yourself and others from tuberculosis. If you stop treatment early or skip doses, the TB bacteria will have an opportunity to develop their mutant variety that will allow them to survive the most potent TB drugs. This will result in the developing of drug resistant strains. The resulting drug-resistant strains are much more difficult t and deadly o treat.

When people do not take their TB medications as recommended, the infection may become much more difficult to treat. The TB bacteria may become resistant to treatment, and sometimes, the drugs no longer help treat the infection.
