Weight Loss Surgery (Bariatric Surgery) - This is decided by your weight and height. Body mass index is calculated using these (Weight in Kg/ Height in meters2). According to World Health Organization Bariatric surgery is required when –

a. BMI >37.5 without presence of any obesity related co-morbidities or

b. BMI > 32.5 with the presence of type 2 Diabetes / any obesity related co-morbidities

   For Indian population OSSI (Obesity Surgery Society of India) also recommends Bariatric Surgery     

   For males with waist size more than 90cms & females with waist size more than 80cms with co  Morbidities.




Bariatric Surgery criteria - Bariatric Surgery shouldn’t be considered as a shortcut for weight loss. Conservative methods should be tried initially. Proper motivation, discipline and commitment with regular post operative follow up is required for desired results after surgery

Age undergo Bariatric Surgery - Current OSSI guidelines recommend Bariatric Surgery for patients between 18-65 years, except in special situations.

Ccontra-indications for Bariatric Surgery - Substance abuse, Pregnancy & Psychological disorders are absolute contra-indications for Bariatric Surgery

Types of Bariatric Surgery - Bariatric Surgery can be restrictive, mal-absorptive or combined.

Liposuction a Bariatric Surgery - No, Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery with no effect on co-morbidities

Long-term side effects or lifestyle changes after Bariatric Surgery - There are no major long term lifestyle changes. Small frequent meals with dietary supplements are recommended after certain Bariatric procedures. All physical and day to day routine activities can be done as before.
