Total Hip Replacement Surgery

A brief overview about total hip replacement surgery, in Delhi/NCR. This blog post discusses the arthritis causes, symptoms and gives solutions and recommendations in forms of the total hip replacement surgery.

Composition
The hip is not only one of the largest but it certainly is one of the most important and vital ball-and-socket joint. The socket is connected to the pelvis while the ball is in the upper end of the thighbone. The bones, ball and socket are covered with appropriate cartilages, muscles and ligaments that provides good stability, eliminates friction and enables us to walk easily.

Causes

There are many causes of hip pain which eventually leads to surgery but we have narrowed down our list to the most common ones:

* Osteoarthritis: This is the most common problem in people aged 50 and above that leads to surgery. This either occurs in individuals who have a family history with arthritis or is evolved by precise irregularities in the hip development.
* Post Traumatic Arthritis: This type of arthritis develops in individuals who had any accident that lead to a hip injury or fracture. In these cases the cartilages are damaged and immense pain or some subtle stiffness can be observed.
* Rheumatoid Arthritis: This is also known as inflammatory arthritis and is one of the frequent autoimmune disorders. In these cases the cartilages can be damaged due to chronic inflammation and leads to stiffness and pain.
* Avascular Necrosis: This happens due to dislocations of bones and limits the blood supply in that region. The lack of blood results in surface bone collapse and becomes problematic.

Total Hip Replacement Surgery
In total hip arthroplasty, the impaired or damaged bones along with cartilages are changed and removed with  prosthetic pieces. The damaged femoral head is replaced with a metal stem placed in the hollow thighbone (femur). A ceramic ball is placed on the upper part of that metal stem. The damaged or disfigured cartilages are substituted with metal sockets and a plastic/metal spacer is fixed between the new ball and socket to bring out the desired smoothening.

Is it for you?
This decision is made cumulatively by the patient, their family, their family doctor and eventually the orthopedic surgeon. Don't believe in rumors as there are no age or weight barriers for this surgery, in fact the decisions are completely based on patient's pain/disability. Most patients who are 50 and above go for this surgery, but again, the surgeons evaluate each case individually by analyzing patient's medical history, their physical strength, X-Rays and other recommended tests and give the final word.

Outcomes and Conclusion
Once the surgery is done, the patient can feel some form of stiffness or numbness while bending. This is because the old hip is replaced with a new one and the problem diminishes gradually. You may face some hassles at the time of security checks, as you may be stopped due to the metal present in your body, so it's often advised to carry a card given by your surgeon confirming your hip replacement. It is often advised to do light exercises, prescribed by your surgeon, to maintain the mobility of your new hip. Routine follow ups are also suggested.
