Religious Posture Improves Back Pain
India
is gifted with the gift of yoga which is a treasure for years. But the presence
and benefits of yoga can be seen in every religion. If we see Islam, the
posture for reading namaaz followed by the Islamic ritual – the salat has a
direct influence on the exercise for back pain as prescribed in yoga.
A
recent study by the Binghamton University suggests that complex physical
motions of the daily prayers as shown in the Muslim religion leads to a
reduction in back problems.
Simarly,
the act of bowing down, kneeling and placing the foreheads on the ground as
part of the prayer ritual in Sikhism also shows the importance of yoga in their
religion.
“One way to think about the movements is that
they are similar to those of yoga or physical therapy intervention exercises
used to treat low back pain,” says Professor Mohammad Khasawneh. This is
also seen in Buddhist prayer regime, adds Professor Mohammad.
But
there is more than just a religious importance to this. It was also seen that
during this bowing position, the amount of stress on the lower back is the
most. But for those with pain in this area, it is important that the use of
correct knee and back angles during the ritual can decrease the pain over time.
It is also seen that in case the person suffers from lower back pain then
incorrect angles of the knee and back and make the pain more severe.
It is normally seen that the lower back pain amongst women
is more than in men and it tends to become severe with age. Older adults can experience pain due to a
number of reasons but it is more likely suffer from pain related to
degeneration of the joints in the spine. Two of the most common causes of lower
back pain in older adults include osteoarthritis and spinal stenos is.
